Nine persons were severely burnt yesterday as a vandalised pipeline belonging to the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) in Mosimi, Ogun State caught fire.
This is coming as the price of diesel has risen to a record high of about N135, a development that has adversely affected industrial and vehicular operations.

MEND launches another attack in Nigeria… at Oil Change

No let up in the chaos of Nigeria. Rebels from the Niger Delta blew up a Royal Dutch Shell pipeline yesterday, forcing the firm to cut production, helping keep world oil prices near record highs as a consequence.

It was carried out while Shell was trying to repair damage caused by a series of similar attacks last month. The Anglo-Dutch oil firm said that, after the attack, some oil had spilled from its Nembe Creek trunk line, which carries crude to the Bonny export terminal.

The dirty oil business

The documentary portrays the image of "development", the way giant multinational petroleum companies would define it. Petroleum leaks in the River destroy flora and fauna, poison the food chain and consequently wipe out the 27 million indigenous people of the area - the Ijaws, the Ogoni and the Itsekiris. The inhabitants dare to ask the self-evident, they demand an end to it. As a response they are massively and brutally attacked by special forces of the army and the police, which are armed by the oil companies. The camera meets at the river militia of the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta-MEND- and presents to the world for the first time shattering images of their speed boat patrols and of their heavy weaponry. The Delta of Niger is a lost paradise. As the documentary reveals, it is a place where despite the natural beauty, contemporary "globalized" hell prevails.

There are indications that the federal government has unveiled a new action plan to finally resolve the protracted Niger Delta impasse.

The hint was dropped by the Senior Special Assistant (SSA) to the Vice President on Niger Delta Delta Nze Akachukwu Nwankpo at the 1st All-Niger Assembly organised by the United Niger Delta Energy Development and Security Strategy (UNDEDSS) in Port Harcourt.

Nze Nwankpo disclosed that in the new blue print all forms of bureaucratic bottlenecks have been curtailed in order to get inputs from each of the ethnic groups in the region.

Apart from matching words with action, it would specifically address the different needs of all the ethnic groups with special reference to their unique demands.

“Each ethnic group would be allowed to give its position on how the process would be implemented,” Nwankpo said,” the summit for us is on agreeing on a joint stakeholders plan”.

Yet another half baked plan for the Niger Delta which clearly no insight into the demands fo the people of the region
